Living Wine Culture for 30 Generations

A total of 897 years of history make us one of the oldest wineries in the world, and the passion and perfection of more than 30 generations of winegrowers make us unique. In their tradition, we produce wines that tell our stories with experience and foresight as well as curiosity andinnovation.

We live and work in the heart of the Franconian wine region and cultural landscape at the “Staatlicher Hofkeller Würzburg” (State Court-Owned Wine Cellar Wuerzburg). The center of our work, our wine cellar, is in the middle of Wurzburg in the World Heritage Site of the Residence.

Excellent wines are only produced when special vineyards and enthusiastic people come together. Therefore, we strive to create harmonious cultivation and a close connection between man and nature.

The special geological quality of Franconia blesses us with four different rock formations from Hörstein on the lower Main River to Handthal in the Steigerwald forest. This is how we create vibrant and finely structured wines on primary rock, elegant and earthy notes on shell limestone, distinctive fruity wines on gypsum-keuper (Gipskeuper) and characteristic red wines on warm red sandstone.

Along the Main River, we showcase the diversity of the region and take you on tasting trips through this lively wine landscape. Most of our vinyards are limited to a maximum yield of 60 hl per hectare. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand and the harvest must consist of physiologically fully ripe grapes. The wines are produced exclusively by traditional production methods. The appropriate, regionally approved grape varieties are defined for the respective vineyard.  The most important grape varieties are Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling.
