About us

This historic winery was founded in 1881 by Josef Neus and is located in the renowned German village of Ingelheim. During Germany's golden age of winemaking in the early 19th century, it gained worldwide renown for its Pinot Noir red wines. Since Charlemagne established his palace here, various red grape varieties have been cultivated. J. Neus Winery has long been synonymous with the Pinot Noir tradition in this red wine region and was once among Germany's most celebrated estates. In 1888, Neus red wine was rated Germany's second-best red by the German encyclopedia (Konversations Lexikon): “Mild, fiery, full-bodied, spicy and sweet.” It won awards at the 1900 Paris World's Fair and the 1904 St. Louis International Exposition. The estate boasts the largest vaulted cellar in Rheinhessen, constructed in the 19th century using Germany's most advanced cellar-building techniques of the time. This unparalleled structure immediately drew countless visitors upon its completion. After centuries of passage, the cellar retains its original charm, embodying the artistic expression and legacy of Celtic spirit while narrating its glorious past. In 1920, the region suffered severe pest infestations, nearly wiping out the Pinot Noir variety. Founder Josef dedicated himself to developing a root-knot nematode-resistant Pinot Noir clone, known as Neus Pinot Noir. This clone became widely recognized locally and is extensively used by many top-tier wine estates for its exceptional quality. It can be said that Mr. Josef single-handedly saved the region's Pinot Noir variety, ensuring its survival to this day.

Since 2012, the J. Neus estate has been managed and meticulously cared for by the Schmitz family, earning the Best Wine Tourism Award in 2018. Today, these ancient vines are cultivated using modern viticultural techniques. Drawing on a deep understanding of the local shell limestone soils, the winemaker aims to restore Neus Pinot Noir to its former global renown while honoring its glorious heritage. The estate is featured in Germany's 2025 Wine Guide: “Working tirelessly and meticulously year-round to produce the finest wines,” and “A refined and astonishing Pinot Noir range—even in Burgundy, we rarely encounter such precision and freshness.”

As for the estate's next goal? Simply put: to further elevate quality and ascend to the pinnacle of German Pinot Noir.

Burgundy tradition since 1881.

With the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties, we pursue a clear goal: to produce German Burgundy wines at a level that is indistinguishable from French Burgundy wines. Thanks to long aging periods on the lees in wooden barrels and a very modern philosophy, we are already one of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers in Germany.

We currently cultivate 15 hectares, 75% of which are Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. The remaining 5% is covered by Pinot Blanc, Pinot Madleine, and small amounts of other grape varieties.
