About us

The legendary Karthäuserhof estate is a place of fairy tales. Overlooking the sublime Ruwer valley, we are the eighth oldest winegrowing estate in the world*. Officially founded as a monastery in 1335, this “Farm of the Carthusians” was given as a gift to the monks of the Carthusian order by Prince-Elector Balduin of Luxembourg. Incredibly, the Karthäuserhof has now been owned by seven generations of our family since 1811.

Standing out among the finest sites in all of Germany, our monopole vineyard is renowned for its exceptional quality. The vineyards of the Karthäuserhofberg estate, held exclusively by our family, are a truly precious resource.

In 1868, the Royal Prussian government commissioned a survey of vineyards in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region and, even then, “Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg” received the highest possible classification.

Products & Services

We produce Riesling wines of the highest standard

Our wine program follows the VDP classification structure, with VDP.GUTSWEINE, VDP.ORTSWEINE and wines from our VDP.GROSSE LAGE. The VDP.Gutsweine and VDP.Ortsweine include our range of dry premium wines with the exception of the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, which are the sole dry wine to appear with our vineyard name.

Karthäuserhofberg Riesling GG

The grapes for our VDP.Grosses Gewächs come from our
exclusive monopole Grand Cru site Karthäuserhofberg. It
faces south by southwest and covers almost 20 hectares with
a slope of up to 55%. The unique microclimate and because
of the high iron concentration pink-copper-colored Devonian
slate, make it the perfect place for the production of high
quality Rieslings.

Schieferkristall Riesling trocken

The grapes come mainly from our monopole vineyard site
Karthäuserhofberg, but deliberately also from Mertesdorf
and Waldrach (all in the Ruwer valley) in order to bring
together the entire spectrum of the different terroirs of
Karthäuserhof into our estate wine

Eitelsbacher Riesling Alte Reben

The grapes are grown in the village of Eitelsbach
(Ruwer valley) with an unique microclimate and the
distinctive Devonian slate in the soil. They originate
from the older plots of Karthäuserhofberg with
forty years old wines.
